The current waste disposal site in Davao

The City of Davao in the Philippines‚ at a loss for how to dispose of waste‚ asked the Embassy of Japan for support in 2015.

To respond to this request‚ Nippon Steel Corporation and the City of Kitakyushu conducted field research.

They investigated waste generation and waste-to-energy (WtE) project feasibility through JICA and Ministry of the Environment projects.

At the same time‚ they started a JICA Technical Cooperation Project at the Grass-roots Level with the goal of reducing and recycling waste in the city‚ which was the core of the waste problem.

In the meantime‚ the two cities cooperated further regarding environmental issues‚ including visits by the citiesf governors and a town friendship agreement on the environment.

Both national governments approved those activities‚ and the grand aid project to construct and operate a WtE facility commenced in March 2018.

The procurement agency is operating the project behalf of City of Davao‚ and KITA is participating in the project as a consultant for the local government.

The project aims to confirm the laws and the profitability of the project in connection with public service procurement and the environment‚ discuss methods of construction and operation‚ and place orders to realize the WtE project.

The establishment of the project requires a certain system like a feed-in tariff (FIT).

The government of the Philippines is currently arranging an environment for this‚ and the project is advancing in response to these efforts.

It is planned to enter the public service procurement phase and the conclusion of agreement phase after the necessary studies are conducted.
